Forget Cupid! Why Galentine’s Day is the February Get-Together We Actually Need

Let’s be honest: by the time the middle of February rolls around, most of us are a bit tired of the constant stream of heart-shaped balloons and those pricey red roses. Whether you’re in a relationship or perfectly happy on your own, Valentine’s Day can feel like a lot of work!

That’s where Galentine’s Day comes in.

It happens on February 13th, and it’s basically just a day for your best mates. It’s become a big hit here in the UK lately, and honestly, it’s a brilliant excuse to liven up a cold, grey February.

So, what’s the difference?

It’s simple, really: Valentine’s is for romance, but Galentine’s is for friendship. While the 14th is often about fancy dinners and trying to find a card that isn’t too cheesy, the 13th is for the people who’ve seen you at your worst and still love you anyway! It’s not meant to be romantic at all. The whole idea is to leave the partners at home and just catch up with your pals instead.

Is it just for women?

Well, the name comes from “Gals,” and it started out on a TV show as a “ladies celebrating ladies” thing. But since it’s become popular over here, the rules have changed.

While it’s still very popular for girl groups, you’ll see plenty of “Palentine’s” parties for everyone now. It’s not really about gender anymore. It’s more of a way for all of us to say that you don’t need a romantic partner to have a fun night out!

One for the Lads

It’s definitely not just a “girly” thing, either. Plenty of blokes are using the 13th as a prompt to check in with each other. Whether it’s heading to the pub for a quick pint, hopping online for a few rounds of a video game, or even just catching up at the gym, it’s a great excuse to have a proper natter.

Checking in on your mates doesn’t have to be a big deal, but it makes a huge difference. There’s nothing “soft” about making sure your friends are doing alright over a game of FIFA or a workout session!

The British Spin

We’ve definitely put our own stamp on the celebrations:

  • The Bottomless Brunch: A classic choice! There’s nothing quite like catching up over some breakfast and a few glasses of bubbly at a local café.
  • A Cosy Night In: Lots of us prefer to skip the crowds. It’s just as fun to grab a nice meal deal from the supermarket, open a bottle of wine, and put on a film that isn’t a tear-jerker.
  • Simple Gifts: No one is expecting diamonds here! It’s usually something small like a nice candle, a card with an inside joke, or even just a lovely long message to say thanks for being a great friend.

Why it works

At the end of the day, Galentine’s Day is a great reminder that your friends are just as important as any romance. It’s a chance to celebrate the “chosen family” who stick by you through thick and thin.

So, this February 13th, don’t worry about the expensive menus or the pressure to be “mushy.” Just get your favourite people together and have a proper laugh.

Happy Galentine’s, everyone! You definitely deserve it.
